Selecting the Correct Definition

Selecting the Correct Definition

When tagging terms, it is important to consider a term's meaning in the context of a citation. As noted above, some terms, like report, can be tagged as either a noun or a verb. Furthermore, many terms in the Compliance Dictionary are linked to multiple definitions.
In the Mapper workflow, the definitions are displayed in descending order by the number of citations to which they are linked; the most commonly used definition is at the top of the list.

Tagging Citations: Definition Selection
As you can see in the example above, the term operation has several linked definitions. The most commonly used definition refers to data processing, but the mandate may refer to a business function.
This is why it is important not to blindly select the top definition. Think about what the citation is saying, think about each definition, and decide which definition best fits the context of the citation.

Why is this important?

  1. To ensure we are all in accordance of term meanings in context.
  2. All definitions that are selected will show up in the AD in-depth report.
