Creating Terms Via ISO 704:2009 (or 22)

Given the highly technical nature of many Authority Documents and the ever-evolving world of compliance you will occasionally come across terms that aren’t widely used or even recognized by search engine queries. This is where you need to get creative and build a definition using ISO 704:2022 methodology.

ISO 704 is an Authority Document that lays out principles and methods for terminological work. In order to ensure consistency in the Compliance Dictionary, Unified Compliance uses ISO 704 as an unofficial harmonization manual for creating terms and definitions.

When creating a term via ISO 704 methodology follow the steps below:

  1. Identify the context of the term

  2. Identity the attributes of the term

  3. Identify the characteristics of the term

  4. Combine the characteristics to form the definition

  5. Adding the designation type to the definition

Context

The Authority Document, Section, and Citation the term is found in.

Attributes

The individual terms that comprise the term.

Characteristics

The definitions for each attribute that fits the context of the term

Combine Characteristics

Combine the characteristics together into a cohesive concept, your term’s definition, that fits the context in which it was found.

Designation Type

Every dictionary lists the designation type for each definition.
